Lake Michigan Striped Icebergs

It has come to my attention that the icebergs in Lake Michigan sometimes have stripes. They are formed by layers of snow. These layers of snow react to different conditions.

I understand that blue stripes of are created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills with melt water, and freezes so fast that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls onto the lake, a layer of water can freeze to the bottom side. If this water is rich algae, it can make a green stripe.

When there brown, black and yellow stripes they are caused by sediment. When the sheet of ice grinds down the hillside towards the lake it picks up the sediment.

The water froze the moment that the wave broke through the ice. That is the way it is in Lake Michigan. This is the coldest weather in decades. The water froze instantly the moment it came into contact with the air. The water is already some degrees below freezing.

Isn't it amazing? This is what having the internet means to us, we get to see so many things we never would have imagined.

I hope you enjoy these pictures of some of the Lake Michigan Icebergs.
