Fishing Licenses

Fishing is a great activity and can be enjoyed year-round, especially if you enjoy ice-fishing or live in a warmer climate. For some, there's nothing better than getting out on a favorite body of water and bringing home fresh fish. Others experience the excitement of going out on the ocean and trying for one of the fantastic fish that live there. Before you enjoy fishing, however, you have to get a license.

You can't go fishing without your license unless you're fishing in a private area or on your own land. However, if you're a commercial fisherman or going out to the local lake a license is required. The license money goes toward helping take care of the lakes and rivers in that state and maintaining the populations of fish in that area. It also helps the hatcheries that are responsible for stocking the fish, as well as keeping public fishing areas family-friendly.

It's easy to get a license, it can even be done sitting at your computer. Kids don't need a license unless they're over 16. However, this age varies from state to state, so check the laws where you're going fishing. Some people, such as veterans, state or county workers, and handicapped fishermen can qualify for fishing licenses at no cost. Some states offer discounted licenses to these individuals as well. Prices of licenses vary as well from state to state. Know your state fishing laws.
